Introduction
- the NZ company Zempire introduced a unique new air bed design in 2024 which they named “Monstabed”
- it takes the benefits of a traditional air bed (height) and addresses the air bed design's main weakness of poor insulation by permanently attaching their foam self-inflating 10cm, insulated MonstaMat on top of the “Aero-Frame” base air bed
- don't confuse with the Zempire Monstamat which does not have the “Aero-Frame” base air bed
Common features
- unlike many traditional air beds there is no PVC as it uses TPU instead which is healthier for you and the environment
- TPU is biodegradable and recyclable, does not require toxic chemical treatments or plasticizers like phthalates, and have less odor and off-gassing compared to PVC
- each section (air bed and Monstamat top layer) have 360deg valves with screw on caps
- max 1psi - so advise to use the optional dedicated Zempire rechargeable air pump “Monstapump” which will hopefully prevent over-inflation
- highly recommend buying the optional matched Zempire MonstaPump air pump (or use a quieter manual hand pump if you can find one to fit) which has an attachment which screws onto these valves and will greatly assist inflation and deflation
- manual deflation without a pump is time consuming
- top Monstamat section is 10cm thick 3D open cell foam and has R value 10.5 and top is “no-noise” 130D polyester TPU with 150D polyester TPU walls
- you must ensure the valves are rotated into inflate mode AND the valve caps are firmly screwed on to avoid air leakage overnight
- avoid placing near heat sources as this may cause air pressures to rise too much
- max 1psi - so cannot use pumps designed for air tents, etc which will have a high risk of over-inflation
- you need to manually deflate it a little during warm day times
- obviously you need to ensure there are no sharp objects which may puncture it - including under the tent floor
Single bed
- “Aero-Frame” base is 75D polyester TPU and designed for maximum load of 150kg
- 195x80x42cm;
- packs to 48x35x35cm;
- 4.95kg
- https://www.zempire.au/monstabed-single RRP $AU369
Twin bed
- “Aero-Frame” base is 150D polyester TPU and designed for maximum inflation of 1psi and max load of 300kg
- according to my simplistic maths, the surface of the top is ~4000 sq inches and so a load of 300kg spread evenly across it would equate to an increased pressure of (300*2.2/4000 = 0.2psi)
- the effect of warming during the day: pressure at final temp = pressure at start temp * final temp in K / start temp in K
- thus if pump it up at 15degC to 1 psi and it heats up to 30degC, the pressure at 30degC = 1 x 303 / 288 = 1.05psi, if it should heat to 50degC then pressure would be 1.2psi
- 195x135x42cm;
- it is too wide for most 2P hiking tents
- you need the 135cm width at the height of the top of the bed which is 42cm - most 2P hiking tents get narrower as you go up from the floor
- most 2P or 3P tents are 220cm long so length is not usually the issue
- it will NOT fit inside:
- Vidalido Land Yu 2Persons TC Cotton S-T139 Tent (150cm wide floor)
- it will fit inside:
- the 2P version of the 3f UL Gear TC cotton Kangaro inner tents 160cm wide floor - very snug fit with just enough room at the ends to use the pump
- 3P version of the Goout Springhill Penglai Kangaro TC bird-wing style tents 195cm wide floor
- the 2P version is 155cm wide floor so it might just fit but I doubt it?
- 3P or larger tents - 3P tents are usually have a 175cm wide floor as a minimum
- packs to 78x35x35cm;
- 8.4kg;
- https://www.zempire.au/monstabed-twin RRP $AU449
- if you have room for this in your car and your tent, it is a great option for comfort and warmth
Zempire MonstaPump air pump
- lithium battery rechargeable via USB-C
- uses 4.8Wh to inflate or deflate the twin bed;
- compact size
- comes in nice zip case and has a plastic shield to put on the end to avoid inadvertent switching on during transit
- inflates or deflates (just attach the adapter to the deflate port instead of the main inflate port)
