introduction

Robert BEAN / BENE / BANE (1779-1859) (my great, great, great grandfather, b. 1779 in Wortham, son of Hannah BEAN, d. 1859 in Bardwell) and Lucy COOK (b. 1783 in Thrandeston, daughter of William and Lydia COOK, d. 1854 in Bardwell) both from Suffolk , England. Robert and Lucy had four children - John Bean, Robert Bean (8th April 1809 / 1814 -1900 , my great, great grandfather) , Edward 1825 and Sarah Bean 1825.

Robert BEAN (1809-1900) of Palgrave, Diss, SFK, wife Martha HUFF (c1813-1886) and children, Henry BEAN (my great grandfather b. 1835 Bardwell, SFK), Robert BEAN (c1838-1914) who later married Mercy PINNER also on this ship, James, Walter, John, George, Sabina, Charles & Louis/Lewis emigrated to Tasmania - arriving in Feb. 1858 on the Trade Wind.

a number of families including BEAN, DENNIS, and AYTON were recruited from central and NW Norfolk and adjacent Suffolk (mainly Eriswell) by the Launceston Immigration Aid Society and emigrated to the Launceston region of Tasmania in 1855-1862.

They were part of an immigration scheme to bring honorable settlers to Tasmania as part of an anti-transportation movement.

The Immigrant ship Trade Wind sailed from Gravesend, London on 6th Nov 1857. On Board were 294 immigrants most of whom were Bounty passengers sponsored by the Launceston Immigration Aid society. Because of deaths during the voyage caused by Typhus, the Trade Wind on arrival in Hobart on 22 Feb 1858 was placed in quarantine. Two more children died and it was some months before all passengers were fit enough to continue their journey.

The Bean homestead, Longford, Tasmania, 1931

Henry emigrated to Australia with his parents and siblings on the “Trade Wind” in 1858 aged 23yrs. He was a groom, footman and farm laborer. On that ship was a Hannah BEAN (c1816-1876) who had married a William CLAXTON and their children christened in Covehothe, SFK. Perhaps Hannah is a younger sister of Henry? See Norfolk and Suffolk emigrants to Tasmania.

On 20th Sept, 1861, he married Maria DENNIS (1842-1917) at Lymington, Morven in Tasmania. They had 9 children and resided in Longford, Tasmania.

Maria William DENNIS (1830-) (1842-1917) was born at Eriswell, Suffolk, England on 22nd January, 1842 to James DENNIS (1813-1888) and Frances SPINKS (1812-1868) who had married on 18th Nov. 1832 in Eriswell, Suffolk. James DENNIS was born at Eriswell, Suffolk and was buried at Longford, Tasmania. Frances SPINKS was born at Hillborough, Norfolk, England and is buried at Longford, Tasmania. Maria emigrated with her parents and 4 brothers on the “Trade Wind” to Hobart on 22 Feb 1858. After Frances' death in 1868, James married Elizabeth Saville Holloway on 01 Sept 1869 at Longford Tasmania.

They settled at Longford and as the children grew up, several of them worked for John Whitehead on his estate, “Winburn”. A daughter Sabrina cared for John’s mother from the age of 15. Their son, John Bean worked there also, but the most reported in Whitehead’s Letters (a published book) was John’s brother, Walter Bean “…not only a good coachman but the handiest man I ever saw”. Whitehead left him, (and possibly the others in smaller portions,) a 1000-pound bequest in his will, “to help him purchase his own farm”. Whitehead had at one stage intended to leave “Winburn” to Bean, but about a year before his death his will was altered.
