Image has been cropped.<\/p>\n<p>The <b>azure kingfisher<\/b> (<i><b>Ceyx azureus<\/b><\/i>) is a small <a title=\"Kingfisher\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingfisher\">kingfisher<\/a> in the <a title=\"River kingfisher\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/River_kingfisher\">river kingfisher<\/a> subfamily, <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Alcedininae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alcedininae\">Alcedininae<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They are found in northern and eastern <a title=\"Australia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Australia\">Australia<\/a> and <a title=\"Tasmania\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tasmania\">Tasmania<\/a>, as well as the lowlands of <a title=\"New Guinea\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Guinea\">New Guinea<\/a> and neighbouring islands, and out to <a title=\"North Maluku\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Maluku\">North Maluku<\/a> and <a title=\"Romang (island)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romang_(island)\">Romang<\/a>. However, it becomes less common in southern regions. They are generally sedentary, although some seasonal migration may occur.<\/p>\n<p>Their habitat includes the banks of vegetated creeks, lakes, swamps, tidal estuaries, and mangroves.<\/p>\n<p>They feed on small fish, <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Crustaceans\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crustaceans\">crustaceans<\/a> (such as shrimps, <a title=\"Amphipoda\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amphipoda\">amphipods<\/a> and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Freshwater yabby\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Freshwater_yabby\">freshwater yabbies<\/a>), water beetles, spiders, locusts, and small frogs or tadpoles.<\/p>\n<p>The breeding season of the azure kingfisher is from September to April in northern Australia and from August to February in southern Australia.<\/p>\n<p>They are usually silent, but make a sharp, squeaky call when breeding.<\/p>\n<p>The above was derived from Wikipedia.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This photograph of this beautiful bird was taken whilst kayaking along the Gunbower Creek in Koondrook, northern Victoria (the creek is an anabranch of the Murray River and a beautiful spot to kayak!). &nbsp; Olympus E-M1 Mark III with Panasonic Leica 200mm f\/2.8 lens.
