{"id":6880,"date":"2015-04-13T21:16:47","date_gmt":"2015-04-13T11:16:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ayton.id.au\/wp02\/?p=6880"},"modified":"2015-04-16T21:23:22","modified_gmt":"2015-04-16T11:23:22","slug":"sth-australia-a-last-hurrah-road-trip-into-the-desert-beyond-worlds-end-highway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ayton.id.au\/wp02\/?p=6880","title":{"rendered":"Sth Australia &#8211; a last hurrah &#8211; road trip into the desert beyond World&#8217;s End Highway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My <a title=\"my blog post on tips for chilling out and hiring rental cars\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ayton.id.au\/wp02\/?p=6812\" target=\"_blank\">rental car road trip<\/a> exploring South Australia having left the <a title=\"my blog post on Port Noarlunga\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ayton.id.au\/wp02\/?p=6846\" target=\"_blank\">lovely beaches of Port Noarlunga<\/a>, the photogenic <a title=\"my blog post on Burra\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ayton.id.au\/wp02\/?p=6857\" target=\"_blank\">old copper mining town of Burra<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ayton.id.au\/wp02\/?p=6864\" title=\"my blog post on Mt Remarkable NP\" target=\"_blank\">the Mount Remarkable National Park region<\/a>, I now head back towards Burra and the extremely isolated desert areas north east of Burra that look towards Broken Hill some 400km away.<\/p>\n<p>This area is off grid &#8211; no mobile telephone services, no internet and in my 4+ hours round trip on the gravel roads I did not get to see another car or another person, nor any evidence of current habitation. So not a place to have your car break down &#8211; it&#8217;s a long walk in the dry, heat without water back to civilisation!<\/p>\n<p>The following photographs were all taken with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ayton.id.au\/wiki\/doku.php?id=photo:olympusomdem5\" target=\"_blank\">Olympus OM-D E-M5<\/a> Micro Four Thirds camera with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ayton.id.au\/wiki\/doku.php?id=photo:olympusmzd12-40pro\" target=\"_blank\">Olympus mZD 12-40mm f\/2.8 lens<\/a> or the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ayton.id.au\/wiki\/doku.php?id=photo:olympusomdem1\" target=\"_blank\">Olympus OM-D E-M1<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ayton.id.au\/wiki\/doku.php?id=photo:olympuszd50-200mm\" target=\"_blank\">Olympus ZD 50-200mm f\/2.9-3.5 SWD lens<\/a>, which I had ready at my side in the car for the very frequent stops for photo opportunities.<\/p>\n<h2>Jamestown:<\/h2>\n<p>Jamestown Hotel and church just south-east of Stone Hut:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/40.media.tumblr.com\/a80f8e4abcdecb57e4d984b60c5a578d\/tumblr_nmd39tc2a11r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Jamestown Hotel\" src=\"http:\/\/40.media.tumblr.com\/a80f8e4abcdecb57e4d984b60c5a578d\/tumblr_nmd39tc2a11r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" width=\"600\/\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/40.media.tumblr.com\/743c6efaa32119c5b6b80cf195cb1f0a\/tumblr_nmd350DcQ01r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Jamestown church\" src=\"http:\/\/40.media.tumblr.com\/743c6efaa32119c5b6b80cf195cb1f0a\/tumblr_nmd350DcQ01r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" width=\"600\/\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Back of beyond &#8211; the desert &#8211; remote yet only 2hrs from Adelaide<\/h2>\n<p>I stopped at the petrol station to see if they knew much of the mysterious lands across the highway &#8211; but alas they had never dared go, nor did they have any maps &#8211; their advice, just open the gates and close them behind you:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/40.media.tumblr.com\/b8a27ab10ea659598c18a713fd6fb606\/tumblr_nm7x449ICc1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"the desert\" src=\"http:\/\/40.media.tumblr.com\/b8a27ab10ea659598c18a713fd6fb606\/tumblr_nm7x449ICc1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" width=\"600\/\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and beyond the gates, a 90km + remote circuit on gravel road across dry flood ways (although a storm was coming):<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/36.media.tumblr.com\/da43b43ac2fa15ac2f58f76d9b72dc1e\/tumblr_nm7swyJ0fx1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"the desert\" src=\"http:\/\/36.media.tumblr.com\/da43b43ac2fa15ac2f58f76d9b72dc1e\/tumblr_nm7swyJ0fx1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" width=\"600\/\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>a dry sheep trough:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/41.media.tumblr.com\/1e7b9780cdfb8c8f82ab481832aa9cc4\/tumblr_nm7su333L91r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"the desert\" src=\"http:\/\/41.media.tumblr.com\/1e7b9780cdfb8c8f82ab481832aa9cc4\/tumblr_nm7su333L91r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" width=\"600\/\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>the only water I saw on the whole trip and it was far from drinkable:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/40.media.tumblr.com\/ebbd84f7caa81d0427e6b34eeb8be765\/tumblr_nm7ssyAW361r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"the desert\" src=\"http:\/\/40.media.tumblr.com\/ebbd84f7caa81d0427e6b34eeb8be765\/tumblr_nm7ssyAW361r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" width=\"600\/\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>ominous clouds suggest a brewing storm which would make the road impassable in my 2WD car: <\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/41.media.tumblr.com\/b4e2e12576a7a16200dd3587d08c039e\/tumblr_nm7srye9Vv1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"the desert\" src=\"http:\/\/41.media.tumblr.com\/b4e2e12576a7a16200dd3587d08c039e\/tumblr_nm7srye9Vv1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" width=\"600\/\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>stunted trees:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/41.media.tumblr.com\/ed365afc4a755dcf4eb662ca66ffcf7e\/tumblr_nm7ww2edRn1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"the desert\" src=\"http:\/\/41.media.tumblr.com\/ed365afc4a755dcf4eb662ca66ffcf7e\/tumblr_nm7ww2edRn1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" width=\"600\/\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>a kangaroo hiding amongst the ballerinas (shot with a 400mm eq focal length at a distant hill side):<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/40.media.tumblr.com\/f1640517b061b3f051bbee0251fce069\/tumblr_nm7x01EJYz1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"the desert\" src=\"http:\/\/40.media.tumblr.com\/f1640517b061b3f051bbee0251fce069\/tumblr_nm7x01EJYz1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" width=\"600\/\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>desert hill lookout track:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/41.media.tumblr.com\/995fa2014806d47ad54cace2fc3805b1\/tumblr_nm7x23uHTT1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"the desert\" src=\"http:\/\/41.media.tumblr.com\/995fa2014806d47ad54cace2fc3805b1\/tumblr_nm7x23uHTT1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" width=\"600\/\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>abandoned sheep station on private property with signs prohibiting entry onto the property:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/41.media.tumblr.com\/1d4b33096ba893f485e8a0d81414a286\/tumblr_nm7sq5hv8H1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"the desert\" src=\"http:\/\/41.media.tumblr.com\/1d4b33096ba893f485e8a0d81414a286\/tumblr_nm7sq5hv8H1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" width=\"600\/\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and another abandoned homestead:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/41.media.tumblr.com\/bff80f61ee93e13d1a9ae3f567c0bad0\/tumblr_nmqse5d0Po1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"the desert\" src=\"http:\/\/41.media.tumblr.com\/bff80f61ee93e13d1a9ae3f567c0bad0\/tumblr_nmqse5d0Po1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" width=\"600\/\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>a very old stone cottage further down the track:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/41.media.tumblr.com\/21adae35722bd47473a83d1723423453\/tumblr_nm7sms0ZTo1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"the desert\" src=\"http:\/\/41.media.tumblr.com\/21adae35722bd47473a83d1723423453\/tumblr_nm7sms0ZTo1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" width=\"600\/\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>remnants of a wall with the timber plinth used to support the ceiling:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/40.media.tumblr.com\/5d2b83f7c3d527693fb90f10051cca89\/tumblr_nm7skz5ONC1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"the desert\" src=\"http:\/\/40.media.tumblr.com\/5d2b83f7c3d527693fb90f10051cca89\/tumblr_nm7skz5ONC1r38gd1o1_1280.jpg\" width=\"600\/\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>this is why I took a radio beacon EPIRB device &#8211;
