Cann River region - Croajingalong NP

Introduction

  • Cann River is a small remote forest town on the Princes Highway in far east Gippsland
  • it is a great base to access the remote wilderness of Croajingalong National Park and local rainforests

Nearby attractions

  • Beehive falls
    • just off the Monaro Hway to Bombala within the Coopracambra NP
  • Drummer rainforest walk
    • a lovely short walk down to a cool and warm temperate rainforests 300 yr old Kanooka trees lining the small river and Gippsland Water Dragons lie motionless on the logs near the water (although I didn't see any)
  • Mackenzie River rainforest walk
    • a lovely short walk down to a cool temperate rainforest with black cockatoos screeching in the distance while lyrebirds rummage through the undergrowth

Croajingalong NP

  • a spectacular coastal rainforest running from the Sydenham Inlet to Cape Howe
  • listed since 1977 as a World Biosphere Reserve.
  • best of the park:
    • Tamboon Inlet of the Cann River - boating, swimming, camping, bird-watching
    • Thurra River:
      • Dunes Walk - 2nd highest sand dunes in southern hemisphere rising 150m
      • Mt Everard Lookout
      • Thurra River camping ground
      • Point Hicks Lighthouse - 50min from Cann River; remote lighthouse & camping ground, accommodation ph: 51584268
