Introduction

  • gas sensors in CO alarms have a limited lifespan, generally 4-6 years. The test button on common CO alarms only tests the battery, not the CO gas sensor.
    • most will only alarm when levels exceed 50-75ppm but you can still get headaches sleeping all night in lower levels
  • avoid combined PM2.5 and CO monitors if you have a wood stove in the tent
    • these will often alarm when you open the stove door to stoke it and some smoke comes out - this will unsettle other campers and they may then ignore it if in future it does alarm due to a high CO detection

Basic rules to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning whilst camping

  • smouldering combustion produces large amounts of CO
    • eg. wood fires as they die down or have poor oxygenation, heat beads
  • burning gas in an enclosed space can rapidly produce an exponential spike in lethal CO levels as further lowering of oxygen further increases CO production
    • exponential spike in CO production from gas stoves occurs when oxygen levels fall below 18.5%
    • studies tracking backpacking and camping stoves inside sealed tents show that once an appliance enters this stage, lethal levels of CO (exceeding hundreds of parts per million) can fill an enclosed space within minutes, long before the room runs out of breathable air
  • some gas heaters have a “Low oxygen safety shut off system” BUT this does may not prevent lethal levels of carbon monoxide building up!
    • the shut off is only for managing when oxygen levels are low and whilst this increases the rate of CO production, shut off at that level may well be too late.
  • strong winds can hinder the escape of fumes from chimneys and increase risk of CO poisoning from flued stoves
