descendants of John Ogle and Rosanna Hughes
introduction:
although the Ogle family are not directly related to me, John Ogle's son, Joseph married a sister of my ancestors,
Eliza GLARE (1834-1893), and for completeness, I have devoted a page to the Ogle family.
John OGLE (1802-1877) of Felton, Northumberland was transported to Tasmania on the convict ship
Layton, arriving 01 Sept. 1841 and spent time on Slopen island and Brickendon. He had been convicted of two offences - one for stealing six pounds worth of bacon and a sheet, and another for stealing ladies clothes. He got 7 yrs on each account and was lucky he didn't get more for attempting to escape. In 1840 (?), he was accommodated on the convict hulk
Warrior - interestingly, my ancestor (and Eliza Glare's ancestor),
Lt.Peter Mills was a midshipman on this ship in 1804 well before it became a convict hulk.
John OGLE's parents were:
John OGLE who was born in Newton on the Moor and baptised in Shilbottle, a village close to Lesbury.
Jane DOXFORD (c1775-): conflicting possible versions of which Jane DOXFORD:
born in Lesbury, the daughter of Arthur Doxford and Jane Watson, of Greenriggs near Lesbury, baptised at Lesbury on July 30 1775 (source: Meg Hartford)
born in Tynemouth, Northumberland, daughter of John DOXFORD and Mary GRAY (source: Kathy Page (Glover) who is descended from Helen Allan.) - it seems this version is incotrect as apparently this Jane DOXFORD married a John Chater at Tynemouth
John married Rosanna HUGHES (appears to have been born in Scotland c1806/07) who arrived in Tasmania at aged 42yrs with her 5 children in 1849.
Rosanna was recorded as living at 49 Bondgate, Alnwick, England.
John died in Koroit, near Port Fairy, Victoria.
The family moved to Port Fairy, Victoria.
a shipping record of passengers on the Red Rover (schooner), per City of Sydney from Portland Bay via Port Phillip in the The Cornwall Chronicle (Launceston, Tas. : 1835 - 1880), dated Saturday 27 April 1850 includes 2 passengers: John Ogle, Joseph Ogle, Jnr
Their daughter Jane married Alexander ALLAN, a convict who had been transported to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania).
both Alexander ALLAN and David TEMPLE used to scavenge timber from shipwrecks on the beach and may have seen the “Mahogany” ship. Perhaps they were responsible for its disappearance!
source: Kathy Page (Glover)
Their son Joseph married
Eliza GLARE, a daughter of a convict who also was transported to Tasmania and who also moved to Port Fairy in late 1840's or early 1850's - perhaps the two convicts knew each other in Tasmania?
one of Joseph's daughters was named Doxford perhaps after Doxford Hall and farm which were close to Alnwick in England.
Joseph and his wife, Eliza were buried in Tower Hill cemetery with the Ogle family.
