  • it is illegal to import into Australia a range of items that are deemed prohibited weapons without a permit, which may include:
    • knives made from prohibited material such as ceramic, plastic, etc
    • prohibited weapons without a permit (see below)
  • It may be illegal in some Australian states to buy or own a machete or a long blade knife (in Victoria 20cm is max blade length unless its a cooking knife)
  • it may be illegal to carry certain knives that are deemed forbidden weapons
  • it may not be legal to take certain knives even in checked in baggage in airplanes
  • in Victoria:
    • “prohibited weapons” require specific approval and include most weapons such as swords, crossbows, martial arts weapons, daggers, flick knives, non-metal knives (excl. cutlery), and presumably, as of 2025, it also includes machetes or knives with blades longer than 20cm (unless it is a kitchen knife)
    • “controlled weapons” may only be possessed or carried with a lawful excuse (self-defence is not a lawful excuse, and you generally can't carry these in public places) - this includes all knives that are not in the prohibited category
    • “dangerous articles” must not be possessed or carried in a public place without lawful excuse, this includes baseball bats if you are not going to play baseball
    • in general, you can carry a utility knife in public spaces with blade no longer than 10cm such as a Swiss Army knife
  • in some jurisdictions it is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to buy, possess, use, or carry a knife, and it is illegal to gift a knife to someone under the age of 18yrs.

  • as long as your knife is not a super metal which is near impossible to sharpen, in the bush you can sharpen a knife on a flat rock or on gritty clay smeared on the cut end of a branch
