Introduction
- inflatable air tents have strong plastic tubing which are inflated to form a strong frame for the tent and thus no metal poles are needed (except for awnings)
- whilst they are generally relatively easy to set up (albeit with a bit of pumping being required), they are often quite heavy
- generally perform well in strong winds - no poles to break
- these generally have a replaceable Boston one way valve for inflation/deflation - see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYQQKuWkXlg
- they may POP and be destroyed if over-inflated and left in the hot sun or used with a wood stove (pressure rises in proportion to temperature if volume can't increase PV=nRT for every temperature rise of 30degC, pressure will increase by ~10%)
- whilst the splits in air beams can often be temporarily repaired, they tend to still leak, and a split may mean throwing the whole tent out if replacement air beams are not possible
- tip: buy one with a pressure relief valve or reduce air pressure during day time in hot sun
- TPU air beams are MUCH better than PVC air beams
- less off-gasing and vinyl chloride exposure
- performs better in cold weather (PVC becomes more vulnerable to damage)
- strongly consider buying a double action hand pump (pumps air when push down and when pull up) - see also air pumps for camping
- they can unexpectedly slowly deflate overnight if they develop a slow leak, you didn't tighten the Boston valve fully, or worse, a puncture
- older campers with arthritic hands may have issues with connecting the pumps and tightening the caps - as well as weight issues - aim for one well under 20kg
- they are generally bulky, heavy and expensive but much less bulky or heavy compared to an Oztent
- the Korean online retailers may not deliver to Australia
