Broken Creek farm bush camp near Benalla
see also:
Introduction
- large fairly flat private farm just north of Benalla with a central large “dam” formed from an old sand quarry
- $15pp/night (2026) - bring cash or use bank transfer
- great option for grey nomads with their vans but also for others with tents or vans looking to explore the region and for larger groups even in winter
- non-potable water; 3G mobile only; some minimal highway noise; don't camp under the many redgums!
- pets on leads only;
- large groups should probably phone first to notify them
- the new owners who bought this site in Nov 2025 are great and live on site with their young family and are keen to continue to make improvements
- as with most areas in northern Victoria adjacent to still waters, mosquito-borne illnesses such as Japanese encephalitis virus are a risk albeit low
- strongly consider getting the Japanese encephalitis virus if you are a camper
- see https://www.health.vic.gov.au/infectious-diseases/japanese-encephalitis - check the eligibility section for regions
Getting there
- address: 100 Quinn Rd, Broken Creek
- from Melbourne
- 2hrs 15min from NW suburbs;
- get gourmet pies or soup and coffee at Jackson's Produce Store and Cafe in Violet Town en route (must get there early for lunch before pies sold out else go over the road or to the pub)
- Violet Town is 26min / 37km from the camp
- consider Euroa for lunch and petrol on the way back to Melbourne
Facilities
- two flush toilets, separate urinal, two excellent wood-fired hot showers, full camp kitchen and 240V power outlets in the large shed with lounges and a wood fire plus a wood-fired pizza oven (owner may arrange a pizza night and you can put your orders in that day);
- portaloos are located at further sites from the main area;
- CCTV security cameras;
- caravan dump points for black water only (extra charge)
- no laundry;
- no power to camp sites
- rubbish needs to be tied in a plastic bag before disposing of it in the bins provided
- open fires are permitted only be lit in designated fire pits already structured
- generators allowed in the areas near the entrance which are well away from main area, elsewhere, generators only allowed for 2hrs/day, and only between the hours of 09.00am until 5.00pm
- firewood is available for sale at reasonable prices
- the owner often kindly arranges local musicians to give gigs on Friday nights or Saturdays - mainly oriented to the music preferences of grey nomads who tend to dominate the camp - this decade it would be the 1950's and 1960's primarily :)
- the area around the main camp kitchen / toilets can be quite busy, noisy, and with lights, so if you want quiet or more privacy there are lots of alternate large areas - the large grassed area at entrance is great for winter sun and space and quiet (although it is closer to the road but there are very few vehicles overnight, and there may be others with generators in this area)
