John Litchfield of Bourn, Cambridgeshire

introduction

  • John LITCHFIELD (c1811-1883), an illegitimate son of Frances LITCHFIELD, was born in Elsworth/ Bourn, Cambridgeshire
  • he became a shepherd and migrated to Australia in 1854 with his second wife and 4 children, leaving his step-father (William ELLWOOD) and step-siblings back in England
  • John and his migrated family lived in Mt Moriac, near Geelong for a few years before they moved to Witchipool near Donald, Vic in 1875 and later a town was named after the family name
  • it seems that perhaps on this decision to move to Donald, one of John's children, William Brill nee James Ebenezer Litchfield (one of my ancestors) seems to have had a falling out with his family as he and his wife (whom he had married in 1866) moved to NSW and they both changed their names and never made further contact with the Litchfield family thereafter.
