descendants of convict James GLARE and pioneer woman Eliza Sophia MILLS

Introduction:

James Glare was born  14th Feb. 1803 in Middlesex, England to parents Abram Joseph GLARE (1755-) and Arabella DAVIES (1763-) who married on 25th April 1786. He had older siblings John, Mary Ann and possibly William.

Abraham Joseph GLARE / GLEYRE (1755-) was born in the tiny rural village of Chevilly in Switzerland where most of the GLEYRE family seem to have originated. His father was Pierre Joseph GLEYRE (1711 - 1770), and his grandfather was Jean Abraham GLEYRE (1675–). There seems to be debate on who Jean Abraham GLEYRE's (1675–) parents were but nevertheless, he would certainly have had the same ancestors as the famous painter Marc Charles Gabriel Gleyre(1806–1874) who was also born in Chevilly and taught Monet, Renoir, Sisley and others after he moved to Lyon with his uncle. See Possible Gleyre relatives from Chevilly, Switzerland for more details on the Swiss connections.

In 1820, James GLARE was convicted of theft of a 5 pound note, and transported to Tasmania, Australia on the “Lady Ridley” at that time it was recorded he was a servant, 5'3.5“ tall, mid-brown hair and brown eyes. James married Eliza Sophia Mills (1814-1860): in 1830.  He received a conditional pardon 1836 and by 1840 he owned land in Brisbane St, Launceston, Tasmania. James was granted a full pardon in 1846. In 1846 James took his family including Eliza, 6 children and Eliza's mother to Belfast / Port Fairy where they settled on a farm and bore another 4 children. James became a farmer, carrier and bridge builder - a stone bridge he built on the Princes Highway near Port Fairy still stands but has been bypassed.

It seems his daughter Eliza Ogle (nee Glare) recounted a story that James, “along with a party of men, were exploring the bush one day came upon a place where aboriginal tribes had fought. Several dead bodies were lying about, and between two logs they found a male aboriginal boy alive. He was handed over to Mr James Glare, who reared and educated him, and had him christened in the Church of England. He lived with the family for 30 years, being known as George Glare. Subsequently George died at the Framlingham Mission station.”

James Glare was of a benevolent nature and built a school and home for travelers, which he carried on at his own expense.

His remains were interred in Port Fairy but in an unmarked grave.

Their eldest child, John Glare (1831-1910) is my great, great, grandfather who married Frances Anne LOWE, my great, great, grandmother, in 1850. They apparently met in Tasmania, and Frances Anne followed him after he came to Port Fairy in 1846. Frances Anne had 15 children and was the district's coucherer.

Their eldest daughter, Eliza Glare married a son of a convict who had been transported to Tasmania and then moved to Port Fairy in early 1850's - perhaps the two convicts knew each other in Tasmania?

John Henry GLARE (my grandfather) and Ted TERRY (with hat) in their tent after a storm on the gold diggings at Dry Creek in Victoria c. 1915. These two traveled together as shearers in the Murray region from the Wimmera and Mallee eastwards to south-eastern NSW and Gundagai. When they were not shearing, they prospected for gold. But their paths parted after my grandfather met his bride in Linga, Victoria whom he married in 1919.

John Henry settled on a farm about a mile away from his father's until John Henry and family moved to nearby Condah in 1936 and then to Portland in 1948.
