Introduction
- gazebos can create a lot of amenity whilst camping by providing shade and rain protection for spending time outside your tent
- those which can have complete insect protection as well are a valuable addition in areas where mosquitoes or flies are a nuisance (most of Australia!)
- MANY gazebos are destroyed by strong winds or rains - don't add to waste by buying an inferior product and leaving it up in storms or strong winds!
- strong wind gusts can destroy plastic hubs in those gazebos which use these to hold the frame together
- rain even destroys many metal framed gazebos when it pools on the roof and the weight causes it to break and collapse
Relatively storm proof gazebos
- most of these should survive rain and winds to 60kph if properly staked out with guy ropes - for strong winds, staking may require double staking for each guy rope (one behind each other) and with a boulder placed on it
Fibreglass frame pull out "clam" gazebo / insect screens
- these can be rapidly taken down if strong winds are coming

Metal frame gazebos
- these are all very heavy and can be problematic for one adult to lift onto a roof rack, especially those over 25kg
- these take much longer to set up and take down so tend to be left up during storms HOWEVER, care should be taken to avoid rain water pooling on them and less well designed models may still break from either weight of water or the winds

Floorless tents which could function as gazebos
- these take about 10-15 minutes to set up or pack down and can be fully closed off to the wind and if well staked should tolerate heavy rain and winds to 80kph
