Emigrants to Tasmania 1855-62 by origin

Introduction:

  • this page helps to summarise the origins of the emigrants from England recruited by the Launceston Immigration Aid Society in 1855-1862. A Rev. B. Drake personally recruited these immigrants from the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk & Essex.
  • In Norfolk, the far majority were recruited from the region west of Norwich, centering on Hockham / Larling region with a number also coming from Syderstone/Docking region and some coming Diss and from NE of Norfolk.
    • a number of these families such as Yaxley, Howard, Vertigan settled in the Norfolk Creek region of Tasmania just west of Devonport.
  • the majority recruited from Suffolk were from Lankenheath, Eriswell and Mildenhall, all close together and just west of the recruiting zone for Norfolk.
  • they are included on my website as one of the YAXLEY's married an AYTON and they came from the same region in England as my AYTON ancestors, furthermore, descendents of the BEAN family who emigrated from Suffolk married one of my direct line AYTON ancestors.
  • it is fascinating to see how a large number of families primarily from the Norfolk and Suffolk counties of England were offered assisted immigration to settle in the Launceston region where they became a close knit community and many of the children and descendents inter-married.
    • some settled in the district of Penguin in Tasmania - see here for its history, for example:
      • “L Grant, John and Susan Barker, W Kidd, W Ling, J M Smith, James Hale, T B Scurrah, Thomas and Myra Yaxley, D Good, J Johnson, Amos and George Drew, R Lancaster, John ans Jessica Spinks, William and Mary Barnes, Robert and Eliza Revell, Joseph and Eliza Ling, John and Amos Russell, James and Caroline Sushames, James Bott, Elijah Ling and James Hall.
      • According to the late AO Barker, the first real settlers were two timber splitters, Messrs William Kidd and William Ling.”
  • certainly, the AYTON's who came had additional incentive given their father Edward AYTON (1810-1875), who had been convicted and transported in 1837 appeared to be making a reasonable life for himself in Tasmania once he had gained his freedom.
