camping options and issues for Australia Day 2026

Introduction

  • there are many CLOSURES - see https://www.parks.vic.gov.au/coc-listing
  • dry lightning strikes may be a risk with the expected cold fronts
  • it is possible that much of the weekend could be declared Total Fire Ban days - you wont be able to use gas BBQs or wood fires - so you will need to have a backup meals option
  • you will need to bring plenty of drinking water, shade and mozzie protection (and in some areas fly protection)
  • comfort may be further impacted by existing bushfire smoke - so check prevailing winds, etc
  • given the considerable bushfire risks - you should attend to bushfire safety
  • the very warm weather will bring out snakes looking for water in camp grounds and in houses - keep an eye out and have first aid bandages
  • if you have not booked a site or not able to get to a free site by Wed, then perhaps delay camping until the Monday night
